Project: ST Math (Gen5 & Gen6)
Conceptualization  |  Prototype  |  Character Design
ST Math is MIND's most recognizable product and has been used by millions of students in schools and classrooms across the nation. To continue our innovation and update to a newer and more engaging style, ST Math began to look into new directions for Gen 6.
As a visual designer who played a pivotal role in the development of ST Math, I have had the privilege of contributing to a groundbreaking educational program that reshapes the way students engage with mathematics. My work has involved a dynamic blend of creativity and pedagogy, with a focus on translating complex mathematical concepts into visually engaging, interactive, and intuitive learning experiences. I've designed and curated a wide range of visual assets, including interactive graphics, animations, and user interfaces, all aimed at making mathematics accessible and enjoyable for learners of all ages.
Since we had assimilated a stronger design team, we started putting together ideas for new visual explorations. I participated in the early development stage to put together potential treatments and art directions before moving on to the next project.
Our initial idea, proposed by Dr. Matthew Peterson, was to use 3D and low-poly elements in a 2D platform. We used one of our game's characters, Paper JiJi, as a basic idea to create a world of MinJi. This early exploration prototype also included new creatures and bold, flat color choices to create a fresh, engaging visual experience while maintaining a clean design and reducing distractions.
Given the idea of cubes and flat animals, I came up with some critters and objects to reflect that square and cube-like shape while maintaining delightful details.

Early exploration in the animated mockup to convey ideas.

Besides exploring color schemes and visual treatments, we also created our first JiJi in a backpack that received rave reviews internally and eventually became our official new logo design.

Revolution from the initial backpack JIJi sketch to an animated version, and finally turned into our new JiJi Logo.
